Welcome to my first blog at Clark Bassoon Reeds. The purpose of my blog is to initiate and continue a discussion of bassoon reed making for the benefit of the customers and friends of Clark Bassoon Reeds. So please, send in your comments and questions that will make my blog a success. My first subject will be to explore, over the next several blogs, why bassoon reeds of so may dimensions will work and play in tune with good tone and response. First, consider the many different dimensions of bassoons made: short bore, long bore, thick wall, thin wall, larger and smaller bores and then the many lengths, #0 to 4, materials, bends and thicknesses of bocals. That alone suggests that reeds may also vary in dimension and still work on a bassoon as long as the varying dimensions of overall length, shape, wire placements, tube length, blade length, gouge, hardness of cane and profile of the blades work together to make a playable reed. Please feel free to comment on this as I hope to hear from you soon. Have a great day!
